Random International’s latest immersive installation explores an innate contradiction at the core of being human: the fear and longing that come with being seen.Expanding on the themes of Audience (2008) and Living Room (2022),  Alone Together is akin to an intelligence that expresses itself through the coalescence of many beams of strong light. This uncanny organism selects an onlooker at random and focuses its intensely bright array of spotlights towards that person, trailing them throughout the open-air arena whilst evading any absolute confrontation. The organism is unknowable in its pursuit, the full beam of its gaze always shying just a beat away from its chosen subject.The human urge for affiliation endures within our technologically advanced societal fabric but it is ever-shifting in terms of proximity, longevity, perhaps even authenticity. Alone Together represents the people we pass by each day without ever really seeing; they are the ghosts in our lives, just as we are ghosts in theirs. The work reflects a profound sense of loneliness and a yearning to connect alongside the anxieties of being visible, and being followed. The impending illumination both celebrates and exposes, does it empower us or render us vulnerable? Through this new, outdoor installation, Random International invites onlookers to co-create a continually fluctuating interplay between landscape and person; yet by algorithmically surveilling, selecting and tracking the visitors, exactly how it will play out for each participant remains distinctly outside of human control.
