Untitled - Temporary Printing Machine III
Joint commission by Selfridges and Creative Review. Window 20 of Selfridges, London.
Summer 2006
Plywood canvas, light reactive paint, Aluminium, PCB, rapid prototyped parts, motor, stainless steel rails, computer.
As the result of a joint commission from Creative Review and Selfridges of London in summer 2006, rAndom International started to work on a new series of light sculptures and installations. The first of these is the Temporary Printing Machine. Highlighting the ephemeral quality of digital data, the installation functions as a big canvas onto which any kind of digital content can be “printed” out as a monochrome image.
The images and text however are not printed with ink, but with light onto a light reactive surface which allows the content to stay visible for about one minute. Once the information has faded away, the printing process is repeated, creating an infinite stream of disap- pearing data. The sculpture is now available as a Limited Edition of 10 interactive pieces. A permanently installed camera and custom software allow the viewer to see her own portrait printed out seconds after the image was taken.
