Everything and Nothing was made following Random International’s residency at the National Graphene Institute in Manchester. It is the studio’s first purely video-based work and was commissioned especially for Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond exhibition. Throughout their residency, the studio was intrigued by the nature of graphene; a material full of imagined potential yet difficult to see, touch or fabricate on a large scale. That something so mysterious could come from such familiar and earthly a substance as graphite gave Random the desire to wrestle the idea of this new material back from the abstract into the physical world. Everything and Nothing continues Random International’s exploration of the relationship between human beings and technological development. The piece represents an unstoppable force that can both compact and fragment, destroy and enable renewal.
