FOMO

A part of Marseille’s Spring Festival of Contemporary Art — which takes as its starting point the invention of the photographic postcard by the native entrepreneur Dominique Piazza in 1891 — FOMO examines contemporary image-based culture and its inherent social side effects; the need to be (and be seen to be) everywhere at once within today’s digital landscape, Fear Of Missing Out.

Random International’s  Self Portrait (2010) will be exhibited. Initially appearing to be a blank canvas, Self Portrait prints an ephemeral depiction of whoever stands before it. Once the portrait emerges, it remains only briefly before fading back to nothingness. Although Self Portrait could be seen as a FOMO zeitgeist, the work predates the culmination of this phenomenon; the era of the selfie, Instagram and Snapchat have all evolved in the brief period since the work’s inception.

‘Self Portrait’ is almost a premonition of our time. Other exhibited works such as Penelope Umbrico’s Flicker Sunsets and Ryder Ripps’ ‘Flash’ explore the conception of communication and reverse image production, asking us to let go of digital devices and be ‘in the moment’. ‘Self Portrait’ too can only truly be experienced in person; it can’t be contained in a selfie or a still. Experiencing this physically, live, offers a moment of reflection, an abandoning of FOMO and a surrendering to just ‘being’”.
